Welcome to the first of our 2020 newsletters where we recommend our top three suggestions for what to read, watch and listen to in the field of transformational leadership and organizational change.

“Can groups be intelligent in the same way individuals are? Is there any objective way to say that some groups are smarter than others? In other words, is there a single statistical factor for a group—like there is for an individual—that predicts how well the group will perform on a wide range of very different tasks?” This is the question that MIT Professor Thomas Malone set out to answer in his book Superminds: The Surprising Power of People and Computers Thinking Together. In this interview with The Economist, Malone explains why “hyperconnected” groups – especially those with members with advanced relational skills, do better than individuals and artificial intelligence. These groups reside within hierarchical organizations, global markets, scientific communities, neighborhoods and more. Interestingly, Malone explains, “Markets are the only type of supermind where you are not bound by any decision to which you didn’t agree” and thus why they may be the most effective. Our relationships live in the space between us – and that space is sacred
The brain is the only organ that does not regulate from within our bodies, but rather in interaction with others. And our relationships – be it with colleagues or loved ones – operate in the space between our two different inner worlds. Whether we mean to or not, we so often toxify that space – each of us contributing our individual reactions and fear-based habitual patterns that make our relationships less generative and loving. How do we take better care of the space in high stakes relationships to deepen the effectiveness of our communication and foster healthy, psychologically safe contexts? In this wonderful TEDx talk from relational therapist Hedy Schleifer, she illuminates three invisible elements affecting our every relationship. With more awareness and intention, we can reach more profound levels of intimacy and trust with the people in our lives. We are delighted to announce that Hedy is leading one of the new tracks at this year’s NPI where she will teach her pioneering approach to Encounter-centered Transformation, and dive into the intricacies of becoming a relational leader. In the new year and decade ahead how do we – as leadership and organizational change practitioners, make our most valuable contribution to the urgent need for systemic change? In the December episode of this podcast series, Simon Bradley and Mobius Friend Robin Alfred reflect on sixteen climate change expert interviews they’ve conducted so far. Robin is an organizational consultant, executive coach and a facilitator for the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. What are the lessons across these conversations and the emerging wisdom and perspective they are discovering? As we continue to grapple with the seminal issue of our time, it is critically important that each of us, and each of the organizations we lead and consult, find the best way to engage issues of sustainability.
