Gillien Todd

Gillien Todd, MEd, JD

Gillien Todd teaches negotiation at Harvard Law School and is a dispute resolution consultant. At Harvard, she teaches the negotiation workshop for first-year students and continuing education courses for lawyers and executives. In her consulting practice she works with a range of organizations, from large companies to small nonprofits, as a consultant, trainer, and facilitator.

Ms. Todd has taught negotiation and communication workshops for executives across the United States. Her corporate clients have included BMC Software, Compaq, Deloitte & Touche, EF Education, Eli Lilly, Gap, Merrill Lynch, and Millennium Pharmaceuticals. In addition, she has taught workshops for attorneys in a variety of practice areas — including corporate, intellectual property, litigation, and family law — in the United States and Europe. She has also worked with administrators, faculty, and students at Bordeaux (France) Business School, De Paul University, Harvard’s Center for Training and Development, Mississippi University for Women, Skidmore College, and the Amsterdam ADR Institute at the University of Amsterdam Law School.

As a consultant and facilitator, Ms. Todd has worked in a wide variety of contexts. For instance, she has mediated contract negotiations for a top-notch New Jersey public school district; facilitated problem-solving among 30 state-based gun control organizations; and led a long-term collaboration between Boston-area prosecutors, police, nurses, and advocates to improve services for victims of sexual assault. She has also assisted several local and national nonprofit groups with strategic planning and inter-organizational conflict. At The Citadel Military College of South Carolina, she has worked with cadets on leadership and conflict resolution skills as part of that institution’s historic transition to co-education.

Ms. Todd is particularly interested in helping groups and individuals negotiate and collaborate effectively. Her practice is guided by theories of interest-based negotiation developed by the Harvard Negotiation Project and by her work with Ronald Heifetz, author of Leadership Without Easy Answers, who teaches leadership and group dynamics at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government.

Ms. Todd is a graduate of Harvard Law School, the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and Yale University.
